Tonle Sap View – Cambodia’s Great Lake

The Incredible Reversal of Flow

What makes the Tonle Sap truly unique is its biannual reversal of flow, a rare natural phenomenon not found anywhere else in the world. From June to November, monsoon rains swell the Mekong River, pushing excess water upstream into the Tonle Sap and causing the lake to expand dramatically, flooding the surrounding low plains. 

By November, as the rains subside, the current reverses, and the Tonle Sap flows back downstream into the Mekong. By February, the waters gradually recede, returning the lake to its normal size. This cycle transforms the region into one of the most fertile floodplains on earth, sustaining millions of people.

A Bounty of Life

The seasonal floods bring extraordinary benefits for both agriculture and fisheries. Fertile mudbanks left behind by the receding waters make the land ideal for deepwater rice farming, while the expanding lake nurtures one of the world’s richest freshwater fish reserves. As the waters shrink, fishermen set bamboo traps, nets, and lines across the channels, hauling in an astonishing variety of fish. Visitors at this time may even witness fishermen catching fish stranded in trees, an unforgettable sight that highlights the richness of this ecosystem.
