Khun Chhang Khun Phen – Koh Kong

Khun Phen Khun Chang Koh KongRising modestly on a rock in the middle of a sea tributary, just 1 km from Koh Kong town, the Khun Chhang Khun Phen Stupa is a small but meaningful site tied to one of Cambodia’s most enduring legends of love, betrayal, and memory.

The concrete stupa, about 4 meters high, sits on a platform of only 40 square meters, meaning it can host just 10–15 visitors at a time, adding to its quiet, intimate charm.

Local residents often visit during national holidays and traditional festivals to pay their respects, making the stupa not only a historical landmark but also a living cultural site.

The Legend Behind the Stupa

According to Khmer legend, Thim, a villager’s daughter, was loved by Khun Chhang, a wealthy but bald-headed and unattractive man. Despite not loving him, she was engaged and married to him. Later, she fell in love with Khun Phen, a commander. Upon discovering the affair, Khun Chhang complained to the King, who ordered Thim executed.

Heartbroken, Khun Chhang buried Thim where she died and erected a stupa in her memory, hoping for her reincarnation. A soul flagpole was placed on the opposite bank, symbolizing her spirit. Over time, the west bank became known as Chetdey (Stupa Village), while the east bank was called Dangtung (Flagpole Village), place names that still exist today.

The best time to visit is during festivals or national holidays, when locals gather to perform rituals and make offerings. These moments bring the site to life with cultural color and tradition.

Bring along a camera and a sun hat, but most importantly, carry a respectful attitude when observing or participating in local worship. This ensures you can fully appreciate the spiritual atmosphere of the place.

For deeper insight, ask a local guide or elder to share the legend tied to the site. Each retelling often comes with unique variations, adding richness and depth to the story.
