Veal Rum Plan Stone Field – Ratanakiri

Chrous Phaork Takeo ProvineVeal Rum Plan, also known as the Stone Field, is one of the most unusual and intriguing natural attractions in Ratanakiri Province.

Located about 14 kilometers north of Banlung, the provincial capital, it features a vast plateau covered in flat stones, with strange rock outgrowths scattered across the landscape.

Believed by some to be the remnants of an ancient lava flow, the site combines geological fascination with deep cultural meaning.

Unique Landscape

The Stone Field stretches across an open plateau in the forest, where the ground is layered with dark volcanic rock instead of soil or grass. The flat stones form a natural mosaic, while clustered formations rise dramatically from the surface, creating an otherworldly scene. The stark contrast between the rocky expanse and the surrounding greenery makes the site strikingly beautiful and unlike any other in Cambodia.

Legend & Cultural Significance

Local legend explains both the name and the spiritual aura of the site. The story tells of a boy named Veal Rum who tragically fell to his death while trying to retrieve his kite from a tree that once stood on the volcanic rocks. Many believe his spirit still watches over the plateau, giving the site a sacred atmosphere. For the local community, the Stone Field is more than a geological oddity, it is a place of protection and ancestral significance.
