Virachey National Park – Ratanakiri

Stung Treng Wildlife SantuarySpanning 3,325 km² across Ratanakiri and Stung Treng Provinces, Virachey National Park is one of Cambodia’s largest and most significant protected areas.

Established in 1993 and managed by the Ministry of Environment, it is also one of only two ASEAN Heritage Parks in the country.

Recognized as a conservation priority in Southeast Asia, Virachey remains one of the last great wildernesses of Cambodia, despite ongoing threats from illegal logging. Its vast jungles, mountains, rivers, and waterfalls make it a haven for both nature lovers and adventurers.

Natural Beauty & Biodiversity

Virachey is a land of strikingly diverse landscapes, from semi-evergreen lowlands and montane forests to upland savannahs, bamboo thickets, and mixed deciduous woodlands. With elevations ranging between 400 and 1,500 meters, the park shelters an impressive variety of habitats.

It is home to species of international conservation importance, including tigers, Himalayan black bears, Malayan sun bears, gaur, sambar deer, muntjac, civets, pangolins, turtles, and monitor lizards. While many of these animals are threatened, Virachey continues to serve as a critical sanctuary for Cambodia’s rare and endangered wildlife.

Cultural & Community Significance

The areas surrounding the park are home to more than 60 villages, largely inhabited by ethnic minority groups such as the Kreung, Kavet, Brao, Lao, and Lun. Smaller communities of Tampuen, Kachok, Khmer, Chinese, and Vietnamese also live nearby.

For generations, these communities have depended on the forest for essential resources like rattan, bamboo, malva nuts, and for subsistence hunting and fishing. Through eco-tourism projects, visitors can connect with local people, experience their traditions, and better understand their deep cultural and spiritual ties to the forest.

Things to See & Do

Jungle trekking is one of the most popular activities in Virachey, with multi-day treks offering travelers the chance to explore remote and untouched wilderness. Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy spotting rare animals and bird species in their natural habitats, making it a rewarding destination for nature observation.

The park is also rich in rivers and waterfalls, where visitors can discover hidden cascades and cool off in natural swimming pools. Cultural encounters add another layer to the experience, as travelers can visit ethnic minority villages and gain insight into traditional ways of life.

For adventure seekers, guided expeditions include camping, forest survival skills, and off-the-beaten-path exploration, creating a truly immersive wilderness experience.

Accessibility

Virachey is located in one of the most remote regions of northeastern Cambodia. The nearest access point is Banlung, the provincial capital of Ratanakiri, where visitors can arrange guided treks and eco-tourism tours. Due to the park’s vast size, rugged terrain, and limited infrastructure, independent travel is not recommended. Licensed guides and experienced tour operators are essential for navigating the park safely and making the most of the journey.

Best Time to Visit

The best season to explore Virachey is during the dry months from November to April, when trails are easier to navigate, and wildlife viewing is more rewarding. In contrast, the rainy season from May to October transforms the park into a lush green wonderland with powerful waterfalls and swollen rivers. However, heavy rains make trekking difficult, with muddy trails and flooded river crossings presenting challenges for travelers.

Conservation Challenges

Despite its status as a protected area, Virachey faces serious pressures from illegal logging and hunting, which continue to threaten its rich biodiversity. Conservation efforts led by the government, NGOs, and eco-tourism initiatives are vital to protecting this unique ecosystem. These efforts not only safeguard wildlife but also provide sustainable livelihoods for local communities, ensuring that both people and nature can thrive together in the long term.
