Cambodia Landmine Museum

Cambodia Landmines Museum Siem ReapCambodia Landmines

Cambodia remains one of the most heavily mined countries in the world, scarred by decades of conflict ranging from civil war and the Khmer Rouge regime to American bombings and Vietnamese occupation.

Even today, dozens of civilians are killed or injured each year by landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXOs) hidden in rice fields, backyards, and rural roads.

Thanks to decades of dedicated clearance work, millions of landmines have been removed, yet Cambodia is still decades away from being entirely mine-free.

The presence of these silent killers continues to affect rural communities, hindering farming, development, and safe travel.

The Cambodia Landmine Museum

Located about 25 km north of Siem Reap and just 7 km south of Banteay Srei Temple, the Cambodia Landmine Museum sheds light on this painful legacy while also highlighting efforts toward healing and recovery. Founded by Aki Ra, a former child soldier turned de-miner, the museum tells the story of Cambodia’s landmine crisis through displays of disarmed mines, weapons, and photographs.

More Than a Museum

Beyond education, the museum also serves a humanitarian role. On its grounds is a Relief Center, where a small community of vulnerable and at-risk Khmer children are housed and educated. This mission underscores the museum’s commitment to not only remembering the past but also building hope for the future.

Why Visit Landmine Museum

A visit to the Landmine Museum is both sobering and inspiring. It provides vital context to Cambodia’s recent history, honors those affected by conflict, and supports ongoing clearance and education efforts. For travelers, it is a meaningful stop that connects the majesty of Angkor’s temples with the resilience of the Cambodian people.
