Prasat Kuhak Nokor – Ancient Khmer Temple

Located in Trodork Poung Village, Baray District, within the grounds of Wat Kuhak Nokor Pagoda, Prasat Kuhak Nokor is one of Kampong Thom’s most fascinating temple sites. Situated just 2 km west off National Road 6 (about 79 km from Kampong Thom town), the temple is easily accessible and often visited together with nearby pagodas and rural villages.

Historical Background

Prasat Kuhak Nokor was built in the early 11th century, during the reign of King Suryavarman I (1002–1050), one of the most powerful rulers of the Khmer Empire. Historical records note that during the same period, King Jayaviravarman (1002–1010) also claimed the throne, leading to years of conflict. It was not until 1010 that Suryavarman I unified the kingdom under his rule, expanding Khmer power and commissioning temples like Kuhak Nokor as symbols of his authority and devotion.

Architectural Features

The sanctuary stands on a square laterite terrace, surrounded by a rampart measuring 35 meters by 25 meters, with gateways on the east and west sides. The eastern gateway is the most impressive, rising 9 meters high and divided into three chambers, while the western gate is smaller and square in form.

Within the enclosure, the temple structures combine laterite walls with sandstone decorations, showcasing typical Khmer artistry of the period. Intricate lotus and diamond patterns adorn the sandstone throne, and remnants of male statues, including a partially preserved coiling figure referred to locally as Neak Ta Bark Kor, highlight the site’s original spiritual symbolism.

Two large ponds lie to the east of the temple: the smaller pond (45 × 20 m) and the larger pond (160 × 88 m), which were likely used for ritual purposes and continue to add serenity to the sacred landscape.

Cultural Significance

Today, Prasat Kuhak Nokor sits within the grounds of a functioning Buddhist pagoda, making it a living spiritual site. Local people still venerate the ancient statues, and the temple’s association with royal history, religious devotion, and community legends makes it an enduring symbol of Kampong Thom’s cultural heritage.
