Ba Phnom Resort – Prey Veng

Phnom Krom and Tonle Sap ViewBa Phnom is a historic and natural site located in Chheur Kach Commune, Ba Phnom District, Prey Veng province, about 78 kilometers east of Phnom Penh and 45 kilometers south of Prey Veng town.

The site is most easily reached via National Road 1, turning left at Kampong Sneung market and continuing about 7 kilometers. Known for its four mountains, Phnom Sampeou, Phnom Laang, Phnom Thom, and Phnom Banhchor, Ba Phnom is both a cultural heritage site and a scenic natural resort, blending ancient Khmer history with spiritual traditions and striking landscapes.

Historical Significance

Ba Phnom is regarded as one of the earliest capitals of Cambodia, once home to Nokor Phnom, the pre-Angkorian kingdom that laid the foundations for later Khmer civilization. Though much of its grandeur has faded, visitors can still find remnants of this once-thriving city. Among the highlights is Prasat Chan temple, situated near Wat Vihear Kuk at the base of Phnom Sampeou.

Historical records suggest that Ba Phnom was once home to a royal palace and hall, which were later destroyed during centuries of conflict. Despite its ruined state, Ba Phnom remains one of the most important archaeological and cultural landmarks in Cambodia, predating even the majesty of Angkor.

Natural Significance

Beyond its historical importance, Ba Phnom is equally valued for its natural beauty. From the peaks of the mountains, visitors can take in panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The rocky caves near the mountaintops provide natural shelters for wildlife, adding to the site’s ecological richness.

At the base of the mountains stands Wat Ba Phnom, a revered pagoda that continues to draw local worshippers for prayer and spiritual reflection. To the east lies a large pond surrounded by rural villages, offering a serene water feature that enhances the landscape.

Ba Phnom Resort

For generations, Ba Phnom has been regarded as a resort destination in Prey Veng, especially popular during Cambodian festivals and public holidays. The site’s attractions include the four mountains clustered together, the sacred Wat Ba Phnom at their valley, the ancient ruins of Prasat Chan, and a wealth of caves, natural scenery, and wildlife.

With its combination of history, spirituality, and natural wonders, Ba Phnom has also been identified as a priority area for future tourism development east of the Mekong River.
