Prey Chong Srok Temple is located in Boeng Chor Village, Prey Tor Toeng Commune, Sithorkandal District, about 50 km (roughly 2 hours) from Prey Veng provincial town. 

This remarkable historical site, now part of a small monastery, blends ancient Khmer heritage with living Buddhist practice, making it both a cultural and spiritual landmark.

Historical Significance

Prey Chong Srok Temple dates back to the pre-Angkorian or early Angkorian period (likely between the 7th–9th centuries), reflecting the architectural style of brick sanctuaries common during this time. 

Two inscriptions discovered at the site, registered under K.761, provide valuable historical evidence, although they remain only partially deciphered. The temple represents both the spread of Hinduism in early Khmer civilization and its later transformation into a Buddhist sanctuary used by the local community.

Architecture

The main sanctuary is built of red brick, a common material in early Khmer temples, symbolizing permanence and sacredness. Like most Khmer temples, it is oriented to the east, aligning with the rising sun as a symbol of rebirth and divine blessing.

The entrance features a sandstone doorway flanked by the remains of finely decorated round columns, while a partially decayed lintel survives above the door. False doors are set into the brickwork on the other three sides, an architectural motif symbolizing the temple as the divine dwelling of the gods.

Access to the sanctuary is through a causeway bordered by ancient basins, with the structure itself surrounded by a moat, reinforcing its sacred isolation. Today, the most striking feature is the way the temple has been engulfed by the roots of a massive tree.

This dramatic fusion of nature and architecture recalls famous sites like Ta Prohm in Angkor and symbolizes the passage of time, the union of culture and nature, and the resilience of Khmer spirituality.

Symbolism and Religious Role

Originally a Hindu sanctuary, Prey Chong Srok Temple was most likely dedicated to Shiva or Vishnu, as suggested by its design and inscriptions. Over time, it was adopted into Buddhist practice and continues to function today as a local shrine. Residents from nearby villages regularly gather here to pray, make offerings, and seek blessings.

The entwined tree roots serve as a living metaphor: nature reclaiming the sacred space while simultaneously protecting it. This imagery embodies the Khmer spiritual understanding of impermanence and continuity, reminding visitors that while civilizations rise and fall, faith and cultural identity endure.
