Prasat Leak Neang is a small and atmospheric Hindu temple located about 200 meters northeast of Pre Rup within the Angkor Archaeological Park. Often overlooked by visitors heading to the larger temples, it offers a fascinating glimpse into 10th-century Khmer architecture and history.

History and Royal Connection

The temple was built around 960 CE during the reign of King Rajendravarman II, shortly before the construction of Pre Rup in 961 CE. An inscription on the doorjambs records royal donations, providing an important historical connection to the period.

Architecture and Carvings

Leak Neang consists of a single brick sanctuary tower, approximately 4.5 meters square and facing east. Its brick walls feature false doors on the other sides, while the eastern entrance is decorated with a sandstone lintel depicting Indra riding the three-headed elephant Airavata, accompanied by figures in prayer.

Connection to Pre Rup

The temple is believed to have been one of several smaller sanctuaries associated with the Pre Rup complex. While many of these structures have disappeared, Leak Neang remains a rare surviving example of the smaller temples that once surrounded major Angkorian monuments.

A Peaceful Stop on the Grand Circuit

Today, Leak Neang is especially appealing for its peaceful and secluded setting. Surrounded by trees and lush vegetation, the small brick sanctuary offers a very different atmosphere from the busier Pre Rup. Its location also makes it an easy short stop when exploring the Grand Circuit, particularly between Pre Rup and East Mebon.
