Perched atop a cliff at 625 meters elevation near the Cambodia – Thai border, Preah Vihear Temple is a true architectural marvel. This UNESCO-listed site is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and stretches dramatically along a north–south axis, which sets it apart from most other Khmer temples.

Built over several centuries by successive Khmer kings, a unique blend of architectural styles from the 9th to 12th century, it offers sweeping panoramic views across northern Cambodia, revered for its spiritual significance and strategic location.

Koh Ker – Lost Capital of the Khmer Empire

After descending from Preah Vihear, continue your adventure to the remote ruins of Koh Ker, the former capital of the Khmer Empire during the reign of King Jayavarman IV (928–944 AD).

Unlike the temples of Angkor, Koh Ker is distinguished by its: Towering 7-tiered pyramid, Prasat Thom, Isolated jungle setting and peaceful ambiance, dozens of temples and sanctuaries scattered across the forest, intriguing blend of angular design and spiritual symbolism.

Many of the ruins remain partially overtaken by nature, offering a mystical, Indiana Jones–style experience, often with few to no other tourists around.

In the late afternoon, begin your return journey to Siem Reap. Enjoy scenic views of the countryside bathed in the soft golden light of dusk. If time allows, your guide can arrange a brief stop to catch a beautiful sunset over a local rice field or palm-fringed horizon.
