Prasat Kok Rokar – Historic Khmer Temple in Kampong Thom

Located in Rokar Village, Srayov Commune, Stung Sen District, about 14 kilometers from Kampong Thom town, Prasat Kok Rokar is a small yet significant Angkorian temple that combines historical depth with quiet countryside charm. Historical Background

Prasat Kok Rokar was constructed in the late 11th century, during the reign of King Suryavarman I (1002–1050), one of the great unifiers of the Khmer Empire. Architectural Features

The temple is built of sandstone and laterite in the refined Khleang style, known for its elegant proportions and intricate details. At its heart is the central sanctuary, measuring 6 by 5 meters and rising 8 meters high in a conical form. Like many Khmer temples, it is oriented to the east, symbolizing renewal and the rising sun.

The sanctuary’s eastern porch serves as the true entrance, while the other three sides feature false doors, a symbolic feature representing cosmic completeness. Octagonal diamond columns frame the entrance, while the lintels above display finely carved floral and geometric motifs, showcasing the sophisticated stonework of the period.

Surrounding the sanctuary is a rectangular enclosure (25 × 25 meters) with remnants of ramparts and gopuras (gateways) aligned to the four cardinal directions, linking the temple’s layout to Hindu cosmology.
