Prasat Preah Stung – The Bayon-Style Face Tower

Prasat Preah Stung is one of the most architecturally unique and symbolically rich monuments within the vast Preah Khan of Kampong Svay complex. Located about 500 meters west of the main temple, right at the edge of the baray (reservoir), it likely functioned as a transitional or processional space, symbolically linking water to sacred land.

Architecture & Design

Dating to the 12th century and most likely commissioned under King Jayavarman VII, Prasat Preah Stung reflects the grandeur of late Angkorian architecture. The temple once featured an outer galleried enclosure and a “library” building, but its most striking element is the central sanctuary crowned with four massive faces looking toward the cardinal directions.  

This hallmark of the Bayon style is thought to symbolize either the bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara or the divine authority of the king himself.  

To the east, a large mandapa (hall) extends from the sanctuary to the gopura, creating a processional path. Beyond this lies an expansive cruciform terrace that reaches toward the baray.  One of the terrace’s most remarkable features is a rare tri-headed Hamsa, a mythological bird associated with purity and divine transport. Although much of the structure now lies in ruins, the surviving face-tower and decorated terraces still reflect the bold architectural vision of the Khmer builders, even if the temple was never fully completed.

Historical Significance

Prasat Preah Stung holds great historical importance as it reflects the ambition of the late Angkorian period. Scholars believe the temple was left unfinished, with evidence suggesting that stucco decoration may have been planned but never applied. This incompleteness adds an air of mystery to the site.

Its Bayon-style face-tower demonstrates how Jayavarman VII extended his distinctive iconography beyond Angkor Thom, underscoring the importance of Preah Khan of Kampong Svay as a powerful regional hub in the Khmer Empire..
