Preah Chaktomuk – Preah Khan Kampong Svay

Preah Chaktomuk is a compact but remarkable face-tower shrine within the Preah Khan of Kampong Svay complex. Dating to the reign of King Jayavarman VII (late 12th – early 13th century), it reflects the Bayon-style architecture that defined this era.

The name “Chaktomuk,” meaning “Four Faces,” refers to the tower’s carvings of Avalokiteshvara or possibly the deified king, gazing out toward the four cardinal directions.

Architecture & Symbolism

Preah Chaktomuk is distinguished by its four serene faces, reminiscent of the iconic towers of Bayon in Angkor Thom. Believed to symbolize Buddhist compassion and royal authority, these remarkable carvings reflect the artistry of the late Angkorian period. Hidden within the forest, the temple offers a peaceful escape where visitors can admire its tranquil atmosphere and beautifully preserved architecture away from the crowds.

Historical Significance

Preah Chaktomuk embodies Jayavarman VII’s vision, in which Mahayana Buddhist ideals of compassion were intertwined with expressions of kingship and divine legitimacy. Its design demonstrates how the Bayon style spread beyond Angkor, reinforcing Preah Khan of Kampong Svay’s role as both a spiritual and regional center of power during the Khmer Empire.

Visiting the Temple

Preah Chaktomuk lies within the Preah Khan of Kampong Svay complex, around 100 kilometers east of Angkor (Siem Reap). Due to its remote location, the site is best reached by private car, motorbike, or organized tour. A visit typically takes a full day of travel through rural Cambodia and is often combined with other nearby monuments such as Prasat Preah Stung and the main sanctuary.
