Kampong Khleang – The Authentic Floating Village of Tonle Sap

Kampong Khleang is one of the largest and most authentic floating communities on Tonlé Sap Lake. Located about 50 to 55 kilometers southeast of Siem Reap, it takes roughly an hour and a half to reach by car. Unlike Chong Kneas, which is heavily commercialized, Kampong Khleang offers a deeply genuine glimpse into life on the great lake and is one of the best places to experience Cambodia’s water-based culture.

What Makes It Special

One of the most striking features of Kampong Khleang is its dramatic seasonal transformation. During the dry season, houses tower on stilts as high as ten meters above the floodplain, creating a forest of wooden structures that dominate the horizon. When the monsoon arrives, the same houses appear to float, as Tonlé Sap swells to nearly five times its size, completely changing the character of the village.

Kampong Khleang is home to between 6,000 and 10,000 residents spread across ten separate villages. About 1,800 of its homes are built on tall stilts, forming an extraordinary community that adapts to the lake’s shifting waters. This is not a place built for tourism, but rather a working settlement where daily life revolves around fishing, farming, and seasonal adaptation. Its authenticity makes it one of the most rewarding floating villages to visit.

The best time to visit Kampong Khleang is early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the weather is cooler and the soft light enhances the village’s beauty. (Rainy Season, between September – December).

Choosing a community-based tour is recommended, as it ensures that your visit supports local livelihoods and provides a more respectful, meaningful experience.

Visitors should come prepared with essentials such as a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, insect repellent, and plenty of drinking water. Bringing small amounts of cash is also useful for local purchases, which directly support the village economy and foster positive exchanges.
