Prasat Krol Ko

Krol Ko TemplePrasat Krol Ko – A Small but Beautiful Temple in Angkor

Prasat Krol Ko is a charming ancient temple located in the Angkor Archaeological Park, about 12 km northeast of central Siem Reap.

Although much smaller than famous temples such as Angkor Wat and Bayon, Krol Ko is worth visiting for its peaceful setting, elegant carvings, and connection to the history of the Angkorian period.

Built in the late 12th or early 13th century during the reign of King Jayavarman VII, Krol Ko is generally considered a Buddhist temple. Its name, often translated as “Oxen’s Stable,” is believed to be connected with a nearby ancient reservoir.

Historical Significance

Krol Ko reflects the important role that Buddhism played during the reign of King Jayavarman VII, one of the most influential rulers of the Khmer Empire.

The king was a devoted Mahayana Buddhist and commissioned numerous temples, roads, hospitals, and other public works throughout his empire.

The temple’s carvings provide valuable insight into the religious beliefs and artistic traditions of this period. Images of Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, are particularly significant and reflect the king’s emphasis on compassion and devotion.

Krol Ko is also part of the wider network of temples and reservoirs surrounding Angkor, demonstrating how religion, architecture, water management, and urban planning were closely connected during the height of the Khmer Empire.

Today, Krol Ko offers visitors a quieter experience of Angkor while preserving an important chapter of Cambodia’s architectural and religious heritage. Its intimate scale, peaceful surroundings, and detailed carvings make it a rewarding stop for travelers exploring the lesser-known temples of Angkor.
