Preah Ko Temple – The Sacred Bull of Hariharalaya

Preah Ko Temple is one of the earliest and most important monuments of the Roluos Group, representing the beginnings of classical Angkorian architecture. Founded in 879 AD by King Indravarman I, it served as an ancestor temple within the ancient capital of Hariharalaya (modern-day Roluos), about 13–15 km east of Siem Reap.

The temple’s name, “Preah Ko” (“Sacred Bull”), comes from the sandstone statues of Nandi, the divine mount of Shiva, placed prominently before the sanctuaries.

History & Architecture

Preah Ko was conceived to honor six ancestors of King Indravarman I, both male and female, symbolically merging royal lineage with divine worship. Each of the six brick towers, arranged in two rows of three, is dedicated to a specific ancestor.

The towers are richly decorated with stucco carvings applied over brick, a hallmark of early Khmer artistry. Sandstone doorframes feature finely carved lintels and inscriptions, recording the dedications of the shrines. The tapering towers rest on a shared platform, their forms crowned with lotus-bud motifs, foreshadowing the grandeur of later Angkorian temples.

Flanking the towers stand the sandstone Nandi statues, reinforcing Preah Ko’s Shaivite devotion. Surrounding structures, now mostly in ruins, once included libraries and galleries, completing the sacred precinct.
