Mebon Temple (Preah Thkol) – Preah Vihear

Preah Tkol Temple in Preah Khan Kampong Svay, Preah VihearMebon Temple (Preah Thkol)

At the center of Preah Khan of Kampong Svay’s massive baray lies a man-made island hosting one of the complex’s most remarkable features. The baray itself, stretching about 2.7 km long and 700 meters wide, remains an awe-inspiring feat of Khmer engineering. While parts of it have dried and been converted into farmland, the northern section still holds water, today known as Preah Dac Baray.

The island, or Mebon, measures about 250 by 170 meters and is dominated by Prasat Preah Thkol, a temple built in the late 12th to early 13th century. The temple is enclosed by laterite walls (45 by 52 meters) with four gopura entrances.

Inside, a grand central sanctuary is flanked by two smaller shrines, often interpreted as “libraries” in Khmer temple layouts. Surrounding the enclosure are four small ponds aligned with the cardinal directions, creating both symbolic and aesthetic harmony.

Historical Significance

Prasat Preah Thkol reflects the architectural refinement of the late Angkorian period under Jayavarman VII. Its placement at the heart of the baray echoes Khmer cosmology, where water symbolized the cosmic ocean and the central sanctuary represented Mount Meru, the sacred axis of the universe. This design reinforces the spiritual and political significance of Preah Khan of Kampong Svay as one of the Khmer Empire’s great regional centers.

Getting There

The Mebon lies within the Preah Khan of Kampong Svay complex, about 100 km east of Angkor (Siem Reap). The site is remote and best reached by private car, motorbike, or guided tour. A visit usually requires a full-day journey through rural Cambodia, often combined with other highlights of the complex such as Ta Prohm, Muk Buon, and Prasat Preah Stung.
