Noreay Temple – Preah Vihear

Noreay TempleNoreay Temple – A Secluded Pre-Angkorian

Noreay Temple is located in Krala Peal Village, Pring Thom Commune, Choam Ksan District, approximately 32 kilometers northeast of Preah Vihear town. Set within a forested landscape, the site is composed of three separate temple complexes, each about 200 meters apart.

Today, much of the complex is partially engulfed by vegetation, giving it an atmospheric and secluded character that appeals to travelers seeking history off the beaten path.

Cultural & Historical Significance

The first complex is the best preserved, enclosed by a double laterite rampart measuring 100 by 50 meters. Within its walls stand five temples built from sandstone, laterite, and brick, showcasing the construction techniques of the era.

The second complex has suffered the greatest destruction, leaving only its base visible as a trace of its former presence. The third site is particularly notable for housing the statue of Preah Noreay, which remains intact despite the severe damage to the temple structure that once sheltered it.

Archaeological studies date Noreay Temple to the 7th century, placing it in the same historical period as the renowned Sambo Prei Kuk complex in Kampong Thom Province. Its architecture and surviving sculptures reflect the early development of Khmer religious design, combining simplicity with symbolic depth.

As one of the lesser-known pre-Angkorian sites, it offers valuable insight into Cambodia’s early cultural and spiritual heritage, laying the foundation for the later grandeur of Angkor.
