Prasat Ling – Koh Ker Complex

Prasat Ling in Koh Ker, Preah VihearPrasat Ling – A Serene Shrine of Shiva in Koh Ker

Prasat Ling, a smaller yet culturally significant temple within the Koh Ker complex, takes its name from the lingam, the sacred symbol of Shiva central to Hindu worship. Like many shrines of the period, it was dedicated to honoring Shiva’s creative and cosmic power, a defining element of Khmer spiritual architecture.

Constructed primarily from laterite and sandstone during the reign of King Jayavarman IV in the 10th century, the temple reflects the modest scale yet enduring symbolism of Koh Ker’s secondary shrines. At its center, the remains of a large lingam base (yoni) can still be found, testifying to its role as a place of ritual devotion.

Although much of the structure has weathered over time and been partially reclaimed by nature, Prasat Ling retains a serene spiritual atmosphere. Its quiet presence illustrates the sacred geometry and religious symbolism that shaped Khmer architecture, even in its humbler monuments.

Historical Significance

Prasat Ling highlights the widespread worship of Shiva that underpinned Koh Ker’s role as a royal capital. The temple’s lingam base symbolizes the integration of divine power with ritual practice, reinforcing how even smaller shrines contributed to the spiritual network of the city. Together, these sanctuaries embodied the sacred landscape that legitimized royal authority and sustained Khmer religious life.
