Preah Nimith Waterfall – The Mighty Mekong in Motion

Located on the Cambodia–Laos border in Preah Vihear Province, Preah Nimith Waterfall, also known as Sopheakmit or Lbak Khoun, is one of the most dramatic natural wonders of the Mekong River. Here, the immense power of the Mekong collides with a grand limestone plateau, spilling over in thundering cascades that stretch across the river’s vast 8-kilometer-wide span.

Highlights of Preah Nimith Waterfall

The falls are best known for their mighty Mekong cascades, a raw and powerful display of nature. As the river splits into multiple channels, torrents of water crash over rocky ledges, creating a breathtaking panorama of spray, foam, and thunder.

One of the great advantages of Preah Nimith is its easy riverbank access. Unlike some waterfalls that require a trek or boat ride, these falls can be admired directly from the banks of the Mekong, allowing visitors to take in their full grandeur with ease.

The journey to the falls is just as memorable as the destination. The scenic drive from Preah Rumkel follows a sealed road through lush mountains, rural villages, and tranquil valleys, making the approach a serene and picturesque part of the experience.

Adding a cultural dimension, the Asia Temple nearby features a large seated Buddha gazing over the river. This site blends spirituality with natural wonder, offering travelers a chance to pause and reflect in the presence of both sacred art and untamed nature.

Preah Rumkel – A Riverside Retreat

Just downstream from the falls, the riverside village of Preah Rumkel makes an inviting stopover. The village is dotted with small local restaurants perched above the river, where visitors can enjoy freshly grilled fish and traditional Khmer dishes while taking in sweeping views of the Mekong.

Although once known for its population of Irrawaddy dolphins, sadly with no recent confirmed sightings, Preah Rumkel remains a charming base. 

From here, travelers can embark on boat trips to nearby islands, exploring quieter corners of the Mekong and spotting birdlife along the river channels. Equally appealing is the village’s relaxed, community atmosphere, which makes it a perfect place to unwind after the drama of the falls.

Location & Getting There

Preah Nimith Waterfall is located north of Choam Khsant District in Preah Vihear Province, right along the Laos border. The main access route is via National Road 64, which connects Preah Vihear City and Stung Treng. Near Sam Ang village, a dirt road branches north toward the Mekong.

At the junction, a right turn leads to Preah Nimith Waterfall, while going straight continues on the sealed road toward Preah Rumkel, which eventually loops back to NR64. As of 2023, road conditions are generally good, with most stretches sealed and only short dirt sections, making the journey accessible year-round.
