Ta Prohm Temple – Preah Khan Kampong Svay

Taprohm Temple in Preah Khan Kampong Svay, Preah VihearTa Prohm at Preah Khan Kampong Svay

Not to be confused with the more famous Ta Prohm near Angkor Wat, this temple is one of the principal shrines of the Preah Khan of Kampong Svay complex in northern Cambodia. Likely built during the reign of King Jayavarman VII (late 12th – early 13th century), it reflects the Bayon style that defined his era and spread across the empire.

Architecture & Design

The temple features a central sandstone sanctuary enclosed by laterite walls and gopura aligned with the cardinal directions. Its layout once included a moat and concentric enclosures, following the classic Khmer temple design.

Though partly in ruins and reclaimed by the forest, Ta Prohm still preserves carvings of devata, floral motifs, and Buddhist imagery, providing a glimpse into the Mahayana Buddhist influence of Jayavarman VII’s reign.

Historical Significance

Ta Prohm illustrates how Bayon-style architecture expanded beyond Angkor, anchoring Preah Khan of Kampong Svay as one of the Khmer Empire’s greatest regional centers. Its decoration underscores the shift toward Buddhism under Jayavarman VII, while its scale reflects the ambition of constructing Southeast Asia’s largest temple enclosure.

Visiting the Temple

Ta Prohm lies within the Preah Khan of Kampong Svay complex, about 100 km east of Angkor (Siem Reap). The site is remote and best accessed by private car, motorbike, or organized tour. A trip here usually requires a full day’s journey through rural Cambodia and is often combined with nearby shrines such as Muk Buon and Prasat Preah Stung.
