Srah Srang (The Royal Bath)

Srah Srang Siem ReapSrah Srang, meaning “Royal Bath,” is a tranquil and atmospheric reservoir within the Angkor Archaeological Park. First excavated in the mid-10th century by the Buddhist architect Kavindrarimathana under King Rajendravarman II, it was conceived as a ceremonial water basin “for the benefit of all living beings.”

Unlike a private royal pool, Srah Srang symbolized generosity, merit-making, and the Khmer ideal of creating monuments that served both spiritual and practical purposes.

Historical & Cultural Significance

In the late 12th century, King Jayavarman VII renovated the reservoir, adding a grand western landing stage, sandstone embankments, and naga-guarded stairways.

The reservoir itself measures about 700 by 350 meters and was originally fed by the East Baray, showcasing the Khmer Empire’s remarkable mastery of hydraulic engineering.

At the reservoir’s center lies Kandal Srah Srang, a small island temple built in the 10th century and later restored during Jayavarman VII’s reign. The remains of the temple are partly visible during the dry season, and after restoration, it reopened to visitors in 2021, adding another layer of cultural depth to the site.

Architectural Highlights

The western landing terrace, designed in a cruciform shape, is constructed of laterite and topped with sandstone. Flanking the stairway are guardian lions, serpent-headed naga balustrades, and a striking Garuda figure riding a three-headed naga. The terrace’s symmetrical form, enhanced by intricate carvings of mythological beings, frames the reservoir beautifully, especially at sunrise when the light reflects across the still waters.
